What each type trains
Mazes work on planning: looking ahead before moving. Word searches fix vocabulary, because they force you to recognise the whole word instead of spelling it out. Sudoku trains elimination — ruling out possibilities until one remains. Paint by numbers combines matching and patience, with the picture appearing only at the end.
Choosing by time
Five minutes on a bus calls for a maze or a small sudoku grid. Half an hour in a waiting room fits a full word search. A whole afternoon is paint-by-numbers territory, which only pays off when you reach the end and the image appears.
Who it is for
Every age. Illustrated grids and simple mazes work from around 5 or 6; sudoku and themed word searches are played by adults with the same appetite. This is material that tends to be shared across generations in the same house.
